In an item in last week's Short Takes column we called for a nuclear
strike on the city of Las Vegas, Nevada, based upon widespread reports of
the FBI's arrest of white supremacists possessing biological weapons and
planning terroristic attacks. Well, it turns out the ringleader, since
released, was not a white supremacy activist but a research scientist whose
investigation of possible cures for multiple sclerosis and AIDS included
possession of animal-grade anthrax vaccine. We deeply regret having
taken the word of U.S. government officials and major networks at face
value, and offer our sincerest condolences to family and friends of the 1.3
million residents and visitors of Clark County, Nevada, that were
horrifically incinerated as a result of Operation Desert Flambe. We're
really, really sorry. It sounded so...plausible.
