4 PM. International Day of Action Against Mining and for Free Trade in El Salvador. Grassroots organizing in El Salvador has stopped North American gold mining companies in their tracks. But now Pacific Rim Mining is using provisions in the Central America Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) to sue the Salvadoran government for hundreds of millions of dollars. 7:30-9 PM. Sowing Hope Amidst War and Rape, with Congolese activist Zawadi Nikuze. The Democratic Republic of the Congo’s fourteen year civil war has led to the deaths of more people than any other conflict since World War II. Yet, news of this conflict is hard to find. Come and hear first hand experience of what is happening in this country and the projects that are taking place to help address the deep wounds the war has caused. Kaye, a journalist, says we have a role, too: to implore elected officials to reframe the debate on migration, by dropping the obsession with migrants’ legal status; address its fundamental causes; think internationally; and work toward sustainable economies. 12:30 PM. A Guatemalan Experience. St. John’s Episcopal Church extends its outreach to Guatemala for the second year. Fifteen team members will distribute wheelchairs, build a house, visit orphanages for the physically and mentally challenged, and distribute food and clothing. The team is hosting “A Guatemalan Experience” as part of their fund raising efforts. A traditional Guatemalan dinner will be served. Donations from the event will be used directly for this Guatemala Missions trip. Open to the public. St. John’s Episcopal Church’s Marsh Hall (Great Hall), 105 State St., Kirkland.
