Aug. 19, 1953: Iranian Royalist troops overthrow Premier Mohammed Mossadegh and restore pro-Western Shah Mohammed Pahlevi to power in a coup allegedly directed by Kermit Roosevelt on behalf of CIA.

Aug. 20, 1998: In retaliation for bombing of African embassies two weeks earlier, US launches cruise missile attack which strikes sites in Afghanistan, Pakistan (accidentally), and Sudan’s only major pharmaceutical factory.

Aug. 22, 1791: Slave revolt begins Haitian revolution. In 1804, Haiti becomes first free black country. Due to pressure from Southern slaveholders, US refuses recognition of Haiti until 1865. 1952: Four major American oil companies sued by Justice Department for overcharging on Middle East oil shipped to Europe under Marshall Plan.

Aug. 23, 1933: Vigilantes assault 200 migrant workers, Yakima, Washington.

Aug. 24, 1934: IWW pickets attacked by capitalist farmers, Yakima, Washington.

Aug. 25, 1967: FBI circulates memo detailing plans to “disrupt” Black Liberation groups. Results in infamous “COINTELPRO” program.

Aug. 26, 1937: African American singer Bessie Smith dies after being refused treatment by whites-only hospital, Clarksdale, Mississippi. 1963: Integrated school in Burns, Louisiana heavily damaged by dynamite explosion allegedly set off by members of Ku Klux Klan.

Aug. 28, 1919: Seattle mayor demands “hang or incarcerate all anarchists for life.”

Aug. 29, 1921: Newspapers report that Ku Klux Klan members have tarred and feathered 43 Texans in past seven days. During the fear and government repression following WWI, Klan makes astonishing comeback. The group’s platform attacks African Americans, Catholics and Jews, and by 1924 has 4.5 million members and enormous political clout in some states. At Indiana’s Republican convention in 1923, state Klan head walks down the aisle with a pistol strapped to his waist. Georgia’s Klan chief, Hiram Wesley Evans, runs for president. In Texas, the Klan controls two-thirds of the state’s county conventions. And don’t even get me started on Lynden!

Aug. 30, 1971: Ten empty school busses blown up in Pontiac, Michigan, eight days before daily bussing of 8,700 children to achieve racial balance in city’s schools scheduled to begin.

Aug. 31, 1925: US Marines end eleven-year occupation of Haiti. The dictatorship they leave in place continues to pillage and murder Haitians for another 60 years, rendering destitute what was once the wealthiest country in Western Hemisphere.

Sep. 1, 1983: USSR shoots down Korean Air flight 007 over Sea of Okhtsk, killing 267 civilians. Evidence released years later suggests US may have been using the civilian flight for intelligence purposes. 1989: White House staffers decide to purchase some crack cocaine so Pres. Bush I can hold the illegal drug in his hands during a national address. But on first attempt, the drug dealer didn’t show up. On second try, the undercover drug agent’s body microphone didn’t work. On this day, Bush’s team scores crack, but camera operator videotaping the deal misses action as a homeless person assaults him. He should have just asked his son.

The coup of Aug 53 was indeed a CIA conspiracy. Roosevelt was but one of the key players in the plot
